A Grand Ship

"Kinda funny.."

submission: A Grand Ship
date: September 29, 2009

Art/Animation: 6/10
I really liked that paper texture. It gave it that indie feel that many animations on here have.
The animation itself was pretty good...Decent FBF and stuff..Nothing amazing, but it was good enough..
The art sorta let you down though..A lot of it was rough around the edges. I think it would have been better if you had added black outlines to everything.

Plot/Concept: 5/10
Not a bad little joke, but slightly clichéd and predictable. Also, it was nice to have the subtitles, but if you're gonna do them, at least spell everything right..Generally, it was alright, but you wrote Lincon Park, whereas it should be Linkin Park, who are awesome by the way :D

Audio/Music: 8/10
The sound quality was quite good, and the voices were great, lots of emotion in it and stuff...The accents weren't very piratey though, and since it was "Talk Like a Pirate Day", they probably should have been...

Overall: 6/10
Not terrible, but not good enough to be a good story, or have excellent animation.

Pizza City

"Pixels <3"

submission: Pizza City
date: September 14, 2009

Art/Animation: 7/10
I really like pixel art, and this is some good stuff. Maybe a bit more detail in the close-ups would have been nice. The animation is a bit jerky though.

Concept/Gameplay: 7/10
The idea isn't really very original, but at least it's not a mouse maze or a dress-up game :P The handling on the first car is insanely bad, but I suppose that's just made to make you keep playing and upgrade your car.

I liked the character of the bum or whatever he was. What a swell guy :)

To be honest though, I preferred the GTA option, just running around getting caught by the cops. Kinda fun :D

Music/Audio: 9/10
Somehow the song never got boring, and worked perfectly with the tone of the game and the art. The sound effects were also really nice too :)

Overall: 8/10
Good game, but nothing that special.

Chibi Theatre 1

"Didn't really work.."

submission: Chibi Theatre 1
date: September 12, 2009

Art/Animation: 3/10
There wasn't anything here that was any good. The characters were pretty simple and boring. The fire effect wasn't bad, but it didn't loop properly. Sometimes, the subtitles went by too quickly to read fully.

Plot/Concept: 3/10
I didn't find it funny, to be honest..The build up was too slow and boring, and the punchline just wasn't funny enough to even it out.

Sound/Music: 4/10
The music was alright, but didn't add much to the flash..When the third guy came in, the music stopped for a bit too long before the second track came on.
Some voice actors would have been nice too.

Overall: 3/10
It wasn't funny, nor well animated. Nothing appealed to me..

Author's Response:

Well even though I do understand what you mean and I will try to listen to most of your advice keep in mind this IS the first Flash I ever made, so it is no surprise why it is so low in quality. Hopefully the next one improved a little, as it is a LITTLE bit closer to what I want it to be. And maybe future episodes will meet standards.

"Eeeh."

date: September 11, 2009

Art/Animation: 3/10
There really wasn't any, whatsoever, except for the occasional change in the face..Which was kinda interesting, but nothing special. Also, the watermark sometimes distracted me from the subtitles.

Plot/Concept: 4/10
I know nothing about American Football, so it could have been excellent, or really bad...It seemed quite good, but nothing special. Maybe you just need to make something appeal to a wider audience, as this perhaps appeals to maybe 5% of the NG population.

Audio/Music: 3/10
Some voice acting would have spiced it up a bit. Also, the music didn't really fit the story..

Overall: 3/10
Nothing too special, really. Needs a lot of improvement.

Skeleton's Revenge

"Eeeeh.."

submission: Skeleton's Revenge
date: September 9, 2009

Art/Animation: 2/10
Sprites are renowned for being one of the easiest methods of animating. However, you didn't even do them very well. The running sequences were not synced and there was no weight to it, often when they were standing around, they were jerking about the screen, and it just looked poor. The timing was also pretty bad. Everything went too slowly for my liking.

Plot/Concept: 5/10
It was an interesting enough story...Not much plot or subplot or anything to make a properly decent flash, but enough to provide a bit of humour and keep me interested..

Audio/Music: 5/10
A few more sound effects, and possibly a bit of voice would be nice..The music was quite good though, building up well.

Overall: 4/10
You have the bare bones of a good movie, but a lot of work needs to be put into the animation side of it. Good luck.

Kingdoms

"Not too easy to pick up.."

submission: Kingdoms
date: August 31, 2009

Art/Animation: 6/10
The art was pretty good, although the hexagons would have been nice with a bit of texture. There wasn't much animation really..That would have been nice.

Concept/Gameplay: 6/10
I think the main problem was that there wasn't good enough descriptions..It was kinda difficult to pick up...All these things kept on happening to no apparent reason..Maybe I'm just a bit slow :P

Whilst it isn't a very original game, it's not on the internet as much as you'd think, so good job with that...

Audio/Music: 8/10
The music, although good, kinda stopped after a bit, and the only way to start them again was to turn music off, then on again..The sound effects were excellent though..

Overall: 6/10
Good game, but a bit hard to pick up..Well, not for me, anyway :P

Beneath the Sheets 2

"Not bad.."

date: August 27, 2009

Well, I'm afraid to actually say what I feel this time, but I will anyway. As to how experienced I am in film doesn't matter, any points I mention are still affecting the quality. Just felt like mentioning that :)

Imagery/Directing: 4/10
The timing was pretty bad. It kept on switching between fast-paced action and scenes where nothing happened for long periods of time. One of the worst instances of this was the first shot, where the car drove in. As this was the first shot, you need to get people interested, and it just took too long.

In a few shots, there were massive patches of white from the light in windows. Often, closing the curtain will fix this and the viewer won't actually notice.

A couple of times you faded to a shot from the same angle as the last. This does nothing but simply convey that you messed up the shots.

Concept/Storyline: 6/10
It wasn't anything brilliant, but it worked. A few of the gags were pretty funny, especially the KKK one. That said, thee was nothing there that captivated me.

Audio/Music: 7/10
The music in the first scene was kinda good, and added a nice atmosphere. There was a bit more of that, but never quite as effective as that scene. The voices were, as you said, pretty poor quality, but the addition of the subtitles made up for it.

Overall: 6/10
It was alright, but let down by the size limit.

Author's Response:

I only mentioned that you basically knew what made a good video, but couldn't see when it was done right in front of your eyes. It was quite comical in my opinion.

And no we didn't fade because of a mistake. I don't even know what that means. We faded because the orginal video is about 5 minutes longer than this and we had to make it shorter.

You would have thought it was more funny if you would have watched the first one probably.

Frodozers Vs. Clock Day

"Well, it was Clock Day.."

date: August 27, 2009

Art/Animation: 3/10
Well, sprites..what can I say? Considering there is so little going on, wouldn't it have been nice to just to do a bit of proper vector animation for once? I gotta say though, as sprites go, they were pretty good.

Plot/Concept: 0/10
Well, there wasn't really one. Also, considering that this was a Clock Day flash, a single clock woulda been nice. Obviously it was just a 2 second loop, so thee really isn't much to judge here.

Audio/Music: 7/10
Well, it's Sonofkirk, so it's obviously awesome, but not really enough to redeem this flash.

Overall: 3/10
I realise that it was a Clock Day flash, and it's supposed to be spam, but that doesn't take away from the fact that it isn't too good..

Author's Response:

Lol at how people keep saying it's a loop even though each one was animated at different frame rates and it was actually about 2,000 to 3,000 frames with an ending.

The Movie Movie

"Good idea."

submission: The Movie Movie
date: August 26, 2009

Imagery/Directing: 4/10
It didn't look professional at all, to be honest. It just looked like a few guys messing around with a camera, which, in theory it probably is, but there are still ways to make it look more professional.

One of the things that bugged me was the cutting in the bedroom scene. Generally the best way to shoot a scene if you want it to cut properly is to position multiple cameras around the room and shoot the scene with all cameras rolling. If you only have one camera, I would suggest running the whole scene through fully for each shot. This will just make it flow better.

The main problem was that the quality of the video was poor, but that's acceptable considering that you had to limit it to 20mb in a SWF. I get what you're saying about it being allowed on NG, but perhaps, for its own sake, it would be better off on Vimeo or YouTube, and simply creating a newspost linking to it. It deserves better quality than this.

Concept/Storyline: 7/10
The start, just chatting in the bedroom was pretty boring, however once it got to the actual movie with the voice-over, it was pretty funny, and reminded me kinda of the whole Animator vs. Animation thing, with the character having to react to whatever the director throws at him, metaphorically.

Acting & Sound: 7/10
The sound quality was poor, but once again that ties in with the 20mb limit. The acting was a bit wooden, but not enough to take away from the movie. The BG music was really good, just enough to be noticable, not enough to distract from the movie.

Overall: 6/10
You have good plots, but you don't quite have the technical expertise to pull it off.

Author's Response:

Lol at how much you don't know. The whole section of tips you gave me we actually did. Obviously you don't know much about video if you couldn't tell. Oh well, and yes it is on other sites. I still don't get why people would even put that in a review since it has nothing to do with the movie.

Clock maze game 09

"Needs a lot of work."

submission: Clock maze game 09
date: August 26, 2009

Art/Animation: 2/10
The colours were pretty dull, and a few of the gradients you used looked really generic and horrible. Try to draw everything in one continuous line when you're drawing a line or something, otherwise it looks messy and poor. A lot to improve on here.

Plot/Concept: 2/10
Maze games are the most unoriginal concept on Newgrounds, except maybe Dress-Up games. There was nothing in this one that made it stand out. Some of the levels were kinda clever, but nothing a quick right-click or tab didn't reveal instantly. Try to turn off the Tab button at least. I think there might be a few tutorials in AS: Main.

It also looked as if you were trying to include humour into this. Unfortunately, you didn't really pull it off, and it wasn't funny.

Music/Audio: 1/10
Well, there was none. However, I suppose that's better than something reaklly annoying, so you get one point for that. However, it would have been improved with a small bit of nice music wouldn't have gone amiss.

Overall: 2/10
You seem to have a vague understanding of flash, but your next submissions will need to be a massive improvement.
